Garden Home, Margate

Renovation of a late twentieth century property and surrounding land into a family home centred on communal growing and gardening.

This project involved reconfiguring the internal layout of the property to make more efficient use of the living spaces, drawing natural light deeper into the plan. It also features full exterior insulation and new charred black timber cladding which draws on the local vernacular of the north Kent coast.

The focal point of the house will be the new kitchen, living and dining room spaces to the rear adjacent to the garden where (almost) all of the food needed for the home will be produced. These spaces will also be used as a place to bring together a new family, new friends and the local community.

Upgrades are being made to the thermal performance and heating system of the property to reduce its energy consumption, and a sustainable rainwater harvesting system is being introduced.
