Sourcing Stone Sustainably: A Studio Trip to Portland

We recently went on a trip to the Isle of Portland to source material for a public realm scheme we’re developing with stone sculptor Edgar Ward in London.

For this project we’re working specifically with stone sourced from offcuts and by-products of the manufacturing process. We enjoy designing with offcuts not only because it’s more cost-effective, but because it opens up more interesting and creative possibilities—responding to the material that’s available rather than forcing a predetermined outcome.

All the better when there’s such a brilliant selection of pieces to work with.
